"Cleopatra" (1963)
Directed by : Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Written by : Joseph L. Mankiewicz&Ranald MacDougall
Starring : Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton , Rex Harrison and Roddy McDowall

I have always loved this movie. Elizabeth was such a beautiful Cleopatra and Richard was a very good Antony. Possibly the best role I've ever seen him in. Their chemistry was undeniable in this film. There were so many great scenes a few of my favourites include when Cleopatra made her entrance into Rome (Wow you can really see where the money was spent in watching that!), when Cleopatra made the great show of taking a luxurious bath when she knew Caesar wanted to see her - so funny! And last but not least when Cleopatra and Antony met for the first time after Caesars death. The battle of Actium was also well done, if you are curious about Antony and Cleopatra's relationship this film will fill in some of the gaps that Rome omitted.

If you have any love and interest in ancient Rome, you HAVE to see this! It's a great piece of work, brilliantly acted and very modern for its time.

"Caligula" (1979)
Directed by:Tinto Brass and Bob Guccione
Written by: Gore Vidal
Starring:Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole, Helen Mirren
Well, I have been putting off writing a review of this one. Let me start by saying that I never thought I would ever see Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud, Helen Mirren, or Malcolm McDowell in a porno movie. Now they aren't the ones who participate in the XXX rated stuff, but they are in the area. I should have clued in at the beginning of the movie when the name of the makers of the movie came up (Penthouse). There was some history spread intermittently between the orgy scenes. To compare, let's just say that the sex scenes in "Rome" pale in comparison...by a mile. I might recommend it for a man's stag party, but I wouldn't want kids to watch it for a history lesson. The DVD was marked "unrated" but it would easily be XXX if it was.

This movie was really good. Rachel Weisz was excellent in the role of Hypatia. When I saw her in the film, she reminded me of Greek depictions of Cleopatra. The costumes and the settings of Alexandria and its famous Library were beautifully done. This was really GOOD!
